Karen is a film producer and executive with numerous feature credits to her name—in both live action and animation. She specializes in working with major talent, writers and directors with an emphasis on story development and structure, as well as collaborating with creators to optimize and fulfill their overall creative visions. She served for over a decade as senior executive and producing partner to Academy Award-winning director Robert Redford at his company, Wildwood. She has worked in development with many of Hollywood’s most prominent writers, including John Lee Hancock (THE BLIND SIDE), Paul Attanasio (QUIZ SHOW, TV series HOUSE), Jordan Roberts (BIG HERO 6) and Erik Jendresen (HBO’s BAND OF BROTHERS), among many others.
Among her many credits, she served as a Producer on THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES (dir.Walter Salles), which received a Golden Globe Nomination for Best Foreign Film and won the British Academy Award for Best Foreign Film; as Executive Producer on THE CLEARING (dir. Pieter Jan Brugge) and THE LEGEND OF BAGGER VANCE (dir. Robert Redford) and Associate Producer on THE HORSE WHISPERER (dir. Robert Redford), which received a Golden Globe Nomination for Best Picture. She was both development and production executive for Wildwood on AN UNFINISHED LIFE (dir. Lasse Hallstrom), THE LAST CASTLE (dir. Rod Lurie) and SPYGAME (dir. Tony Scott). She served as Executive Producer on Academy Award-winning director Danis Tanovic’s Hindi language film, TIGERS, which premiered at the 2014 Toronto Film Festival to excellent reviews. The film depicts the ways in which the baby formula industry disenfranchises new mothers from their own breastfeeding choices –with often devastating results. Her experience in live-action filmmaking and storytelling led her to join Walt Disney Feature Animation in 2010, brought in by Pixar co-founders John Lasseter and Ed Catmull to help build the studio’s development slate. She served as the senior development executive on WINNIE THE POOH, TANGLED, the Academy Award-nominated WRECK-IT RALPH and the Academy Award-winning hit FROZEN (which surpassed the $1 billion dollar mark at the global box office), the Academy Award winning BIG HERO 6 and recent critical and commercial hit, the Academy Award-nominated, MOANA and Academy Award-winning, ZOOTOPIA (which also recently passed the $1 billion dollar mark).
In addition to these projects, she has worked extensively abroad, in India and Europe—story consulting with animation studios in Shanghai, Taipei and Singapore—as well as with Disney on its initiatives in China. Karen continues to develop strong character-driven films for the global market and has now moved into episodic television as well, developing a historical drama series for Golden Karavan, a prominent Indian production company. She has collaborated with the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media in its efforts to achiever gender parity both on-and off-screen. Karen’s current slate includes several projects to be helmed by female filmmakers and feature strong female leads. She believes strongly in cinematic storytelling as a force to create positive change for women around the world.
